The start point for the best source of fleet information

Study finds accident repairs cost small fleets £6,000 per year

UK fleets with between three and 50 vehicles are involved in at least two accidents per year on average.

This is according to a study by management software firm Verizon Connect, which found that this causes an average of £6,000 in annual repair bills per fleet.

It also found that maintenance and other associated costs were the top issue concerning 31% of managers.

Of those surveyed, 22% said their top safety concern was drivers using phones at the wheel, followed by 19% who named speeding.

However, when it came to the main cause of accidents, 29% said other road users were to blame rather than their own drivers.

Verizon Connect EMEA vice president Derek Bryan said: "With increasing numbers of vehicles out on the road, upholding driver safety is of upmost concern to fleet managers and drivers.

"While drivers can't always avoid an accident, particularly if another driver is at fault, there are clear processes and technology that fleet managers can put in place to better protect their drivers.

"Making sure drivers take adequate rest breaks, while tracking driver behaviour and encouraging safe driving practices, can save lives, reduce accidents and uphold the lifetime and efficiency of the vehicles within the fleet."
