Date: 18 January 2019   |   Author: Sean Keywood

Grey overtook black to become the most popular new car colour in the UK in 2018, according to figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

Grey cars accounted for 20.9% of registrations during the year, with black falling back to 20.2%.

White was the third most popular colour with 18.3% of the market, ahead of blue with 16.1% and red with 10%.

Previous market favourite silver fell down to sixth with 9.3% - its lowest market share since the 1990s - ahead of orange with 1.1%, green with 0.9%, bronze with 0.4%, and beige also with 0.4%.

Outside the top ten, yellow and cream saw the biggest drop, each down by 34%.

SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes said: "There are more opportunities than ever to personalise your new car to your exact taste, and UK motorists have approached the challenge with gusto in 2018.

"With around 80 new or upgraded models coming to market in 2019 equipped with the latest low and zero-emission powertrains, advanced safety tech and exciting comfort and convenience features, it's great that buyers have so much to choose from."
