New BMW 7 Series plug-in hybrid unveiled

Date: 01 February 2019   |   Author: Sean Keywood

BMW has revealed a new plug-in hybrid version of its 7 Series luxury car.

The new model pairs a 3.0-litre, 286hp petrol engine with a 113hp electric motor, and is capable of producing a maximum combined output of 394hp.

There are two variants - the rear-wheel drive 745e and the four-wheel drive 745Le Xdrive.

Both come with a 12.0kWh battery, which BMW says allows a maximum electric driving range of between 34 and 36 miles for the 745e, and between 32 and 34 miles for the 745Le Xdrive, with a maximum possible battery-only speed of 87mph.

Provisional combined fuel economy figures are between 141mpg and 123mpg for the 745e, and between 118mpg and 105mpg for the 745Le Xdrive.  Provisional CO2 emissions are 48g/km and 52g/km respectively.

An eight-speed automatic gearbox is standard.

Sales begin this spring, with the 745e priced at £76,815, and the 745Le Xdrive priced at £83,560.

BMW has also said that, from this summer, drivers will be able to access new digital services to help with charging the battery during a journey.

When selecting a public charging station, the sat-nav will provide a list of recommended nearby hotels, restaurants, cafés and tourist attractions, along with a charging station occupancy forecast.
