SMEs unsure about EV prospects, survey finds

Date: 04 June 2019   |   Author: Sean Keywood

Many SMEs are yet to be convinced that electric vehicles (EVs) are the future of UK motoring, a survey by Close Brothers Asset Management has found.

Out of 900 firms polled, 41% think EVs will become ubiquitous over time, but 36% said it was too early to tell, and 23% said they would definitely not.

However, 57% said they felt EVs were good for the environment compared with other current options, and 29% offer charging points for their employees.

When asked what they thought was hindering the take-up of EVs, the most common answer given was a perceived lack of public charging options, followed by the cost of the vehicles and concerns about battery range.

However, there was still significant potential interest in EV adoption.

Close Brothers CEO Neil Davies said: "Our research shows that while only 30% of those polled had ever driven an electric car, the majority (59%) would consider purchasing an EV if more incentives were available.

"This figure rises to 73% for London business owners, where the Ultra-Low Emission Zone was recently implemented."
