Date: 09 September 2019   |   Author: Sean Keywood

Volkswagen has announced that the facelifted version of its Passat upper-medium car is now available to order with a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

The GTE model pairs a 1.4-litre petrol engine with an electric motor for a combined maximum output of 218hp, and is available as a saloon or as an estate.

It has an electric-only driving range of between 33 and 36 miles on the WLTP test cycle.

VW says it expects one in four new-look Passats sold in the UK to be GTEs.

Two equipment grades are available - GTE and GTE Advance.

WLTP fuel economy figures are 217.9mpg for a GTE saloon, 201.7mpg for a GTE Advance saloon and for a GTE estate, and 176.6mpg for a GTE Advance estate.

Respective WLTP CO2 emissions figures are 29g/km, 32g/km, 33g/km and 35g/km (figures under the old NEDC regime are 34g/km, 36g/km, 37g/km and 39g/km).

Standard equipment with GTE grade includes 17in alloy wheels, LED running lights and sat-nav with an 8in screen, while GTE Advance comes with 18in alloys, LED headlights, a 9.2in screen and keyless entry.

Prices are £36,390 for a GTE saloon, £38,940 for a GTE Advance saloon, £37,920 for a GTE estate, and £40,470 for a GTE Advance estate.

VW has also opened orders for the new-look Passat with a 1.5-litre, 150hp petrol engine, for which prices start at £25,370, and a 2.0-litre diesel engine, for which prices start at £28,930.
