Plug-in hybrid powertrain joins Volvo XC40 range

Volvo has confirmed specs and prices for the new plug-in hybrid version of its XC40 SUV.
The powertrain, badged T5 Twin Engine, pairs a 1.5-litre, 180hp petrol engine with an 82hp electric motor to achieve a combined maximum output of 262hp, while a 10.7kWh battery capacity means an electric driving range of up to 28.6 miles.
It is front-wheel drive, and a new seven-speed twin-clutch automatic gearbox is standard.
Preliminary WLTP data indicates CO2 emissions from 38g/km, and combined fuel economy of up to 141.1mpg.
A 4.5m cable with a three-pin plug is provided as standard, while a type 2/mode 3 fast-charge cable is available as an option costing £50.
Volvo says charging via the fast-charge cable will completely recharge the car's battery in 2.5 hours, while fully charging with the three-pin plug cable takes between 3.5 and six hours.
The new powertrain is available with R-Design, R-Design Pro, Inscription and Inscription Pro equipment grades, with prices starting at £40,905 for the R-Design model.
Orders are open now, with the first UK deliveries scheduled for February 2020.
