BMW 5 Series to get new range-topping plug-in hybrid option

Date: 13 August 2020   |   Author: Sean Keywood

BMW is to make its 5 Series executive car available with a 394hp plug-in hybrid powertrain.

Badged the 545e xDrive, to denote its four-wheel drive capability, it pairs a 286hp petrol engine with a 109hp electric motor.

BMW says it will achieve a pure electric driving range of 33 to 35 miles, combined fuel economy of between 117.7mpg and 134.5mpg, and CO2 emissions of 54-49g/km.

Available as a saloon only, it will sit in the range above the 530e models, which are available with or without four-wheel drive, and as a saloon or a Touring estate.

The 545e is set to arrive in November. UK sale details are yet to be announced.

The 5 Series plug-in hybrids come with a range of digital services including the new BMW eDrive Zone feature that allows the powertrain to automatically switch to electric-only mode when entering a low emissions area such as a city centre.

Other services include information on public charging points, including information on whether they are currently in use and recommendations for facilities such as restaurants nearby.
