Fleets need flexibility to electrify amid 2030 deadline doubts, Leaseplan says

Fleets need extra support to help them electrify, despite being keen to do so, according to leasing company Leaseplan UK.

It has carried out research showing that while 82% of UK fleet managers are interested in having an EV fleet, 33% have stopped preparing for the UK Government's ban on new ICE vehicle sales as they don't have confidence in the deadline.

The government has announced it will ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030, with hybrids to follow from 2035.

The research found a range of perceived barriers to electrification among fleet managers, with 49% thinking switching to EVs would be very time-intensive, 34% concerned about a lack of nearby charging points, and 30% put off by the high purchase price of EVs.

The research also found 21% citing a lack of flexibility in current ICE vehicle lease contracts as a barrier to EV adoption - something Leaseplan claims is addressed by its new EV Switch and Leaseplan Confident products, along with its existing Leaseplan Flexible product.

Leaseplan UK commercial director Chris Black said: "Introducing flexibility to fleets is now more important than ever, given the impact of the pandemic over the past nine months.

"Fleet managers need increased support as they face sustainability demands and start their journey to electrification.

"That's why we're offering a range of flexible product propositions, that enable customers with varying fleet sizes and vehicle types the opportunity to benefit from a more flexible approach to fleet management."
