DS 9 unveiled as saloon with hybrid power

DS has unveiled the DS 9, a saloon with a hybrid powertrain that's intended to rival the Volvo S60 and Audi A4.
DS is the sister brand to Citroën and Peugeot that's positioned as a premium, luxury offering - a French alternative to the German brands. With the DS 9, it hopes to beat the Germans at their own game.
Although the DS 9 will be sold in Europe, it is primarily intended for the Chinese market. What's more, it will even be produced in China.
As such, it's a 4.9m long three-box saloon with a relatively long bonnet, a traditional boot and generous space in the back.
It will be powered by a choice of plug-in hybrid powertrains or a petrol engine, with no current plans for a diesel.
The standard E-Tense, the only powertrain available from launch, will use a similar system to the Peugeot 508 hybrid, combining a 1.6-litre petrol engine with an 11.9kWh battery, giving 225hp and an electric range between 25 and 31 miles.
Later on, a 250hp hybrid with an increased electric range and a 360hp hybrid with all-wheel drive will join the line-up. A 225hp 1.6-litre petrol engine will also become available.
In line with DS's premium aspirations, the DS 9 will be available with extended leather packages for the interior, massaging seats front and back, mood lighting, a fancy analogue clock and crystal-themed interior detailing. Acoustic glass and a Focal sound system should ensure aural serenity on board.
The DS 9 comes with a number of other advanced technologies, including active suspension that scans the road ahead, semi-autonomous driving features, night vision, and the ability to unlock and drive the car using a smartphone as a key.
