Ford invests £35.5m in Valencia factory to produce hybrid S-Max, Galaxy and Kuga

Date: 17 January 2020   |   Author: Illya Verpraet

Ford is launching a push to electrify more of its range with a ?42m (£35.5m) investment in its Valencia factory in Spain, where it produces the S-Max and Galaxy MPVs, the Kuga SUV and the Mondeo.

A large portion of the investment has gone into a new battery assembly facility, where two assembly lines will enable the lithium-ion batteries to be produced close to the cars they will be installed in. The battery assembly plant will begin production in September.

As such, Ford will introduce hybrid versions of the S-Max and Galaxy in 2021. When the new Kuga launches later this year, it will also have a hybrid option.

The S-Max and Galaxy hybrid will be full hybrids. In other words, they will not be plug-in hybrids. They will combine 2.5-litre Atkinson cycle petrol engine with an electric motor and an automatic gearbox.

The powertrain will produce 200hp and Ford is targeting WLTP CO2 emissions of 140g/km for both models, as well as towing capacity of 1,500kg.

The S-Max will offer a choice of five or seven seats, while the Galaxy will always come with seven seats.

The new Kuga will be available as a mild hybrid, a full hybrid and as a plug-in hybrid.
