Grey once again the most popular car colour in 2019

Date: 17 January 2020   |   Author: Illya Verpraet

Grey strengthened its position as the UK's most chosen car colour in 2019, with more than one in five new cars (22.6%) sold painted grey. Black and white took the other podium spots.

Britain's streets turned even more monochrome in 2019 than in 2018, as 60.7% of new cars registered were grey, black or white. A primary colour hasn't made it into the top three since 2010.

This order is the same as it was in 2018, with grey up 5.3% to 521,273, black down 2.4% and white down 4.1%.

The rest of the top 10 was made up of blue, red, silver, orange, green, bronze and yellow.

Buyers had different preferences depending on the segment, with small cars more likely to be painted white and executive cars more likely to be painted black.

Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive, said: "For most buyers, the colour is the first of many options they'll select on their new car, and today there are more possibilities to personalise your car than ever before."

"Drivers can choose from many hundreds of models equipped with the latest low and zero emission powertrains, advanced safety and connected tech and exciting comfort and convenience features. There really is something to suit every driving need - and colour taste - on the market in 2020."
