Jaguar Land Rover to cut 500 jobs at Halewood factory

Date: 23 January 2020   |   Author: Illya Verpraet

JLR is changing the shift pattern at its Halewood factory, resulting in 500 job losses.

The factory in Halewood, near Liverpool, produces the Land Rover Discovery Sport and the Range Rover Evoque, two of the car manufacturer's most popular models. As such, the change "is about efficiency, not loss of volume", JLR said in a statement.

The Halewood plant is moving from a three-shift to a 'two-plus' shift pattern from April 2020, which will affect around 10% of the 4000-strong work force.

The statement also said: "This will deliver significant operating efficiencies at the plant, while enabling us to meet the growing customer demand for our new Evoque and Discovery Sport.

"Halewood employees have the opportunity to leave through an enhanced voluntary redundancy programme."

This latest round of redundancies is a part of JLR's project to return the firm to profitability after collapsing diesel sales and slowing sales in China hit it hard. In the third quarter of 2019, JLR posted a £156m pre-tax profit.
