Cupra unveils Formentor hybrid SUV

Date: 02 March 2020   |   Author: Illya Verpraet

Cupra, Seat's former performance brand which was spun off, has unveiled the Formentor, a mid-size SUV with a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

The Formentor is Cupra's first own model that isn't a performance version of an existing Seat. As such, it's slightly longer than the Seat Ateca, but not as long as the Tarraco. Of course, it uses a lot of components shared with other VW Group products.

Powertrain-wise, it's similar to the Cupra Leon, with a choice of either 310hp from a 2.0-litre petrol engine with all-wheel drive, or 245hp from a plug-in hybrid system.

The hybrid system is much the same as the Cupra Leon eHybrid's, with an electric motor and 13kWh battery pack assisting a 1.4-litre TSI petrol engine for a 31-mile range.

All Formentors get an automatic dual-clutch gearbox as standard, as well as a 12in infotainment screen with Apple Carplay, Android Auto, four USB-C sockets and an embedded sim card. It also features adaptive dampers, adaptive cruise control, blind spot detection and 'Exist Assist', which will warn the driver if it is unsafe to open the door.

Deliveries will start in the last quarter of 2020.
