Mercedes hybridises A-class derivatives

Mercedes-Benz is launching three plug-in hybrid versions of A-Class derivatives: The CLA 250 e, the CLA 250 e shooting brake and the GLA 250 e.
The regular A-class, both the hatchback and the saloon, has been available as an A 250 e plug-in hybrid for a while. Now, the CLA - the more stylish saloon and hatchback version of the A-class - and the GLA - the A-Class-sized SUV - also become available with the same powertrain.
That means they get a 1.3-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, assisted by a 100hp electric motor and a 15.5kWh battery, for a system output of 218hp and an electric range of 44-49 miles. The system drives through an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.
CO2 emissions (using the NEDC cycle) stand at 35g/km for an CLA saloon, rising to a 38-42g/km for a GLA.
Mercedes reckons that the battery can be charged from empty to full in 1h 45min from a 7.4kW wallbox. A 10%-80% charge should take just 25 minutes.
Although it hasn't released any figures yet, Mercedes claims that the reduction in boot space as a result of the hybrid system is minimal.
