MOTs suspended for six months from 30 March

Vehicles that are due for an MOT from 30 March will automatically be given a 6-month exemption, starting from the due date.
This also applies to 3-year old cars that need their first MOT.
Vehicles with an MOT due date before 30 March will still need to be inspected before that date. If they fail, they will need to be retested to be legal to drive. They will not get an extension.
MOT stations, like all garages, are allowed to stay open for essential services, so people can stay mobile if they need to.
The DVSA says that people must make sure that their vehicle is safe to drive and roadworthy, even if their MOT has been automatically extended. If vehicles need to be repaired, people should take it to the nearest open garage.
Further guidance includes that MOT test centres should not print off the certifcate, they should use seat covers and new disposable gloves for every test, and should avoid cash payments as much as possible.
