Paris motor show 2020 cancelled in current format

Date: 01 April 2020   |   Author: Illya Verpraet

The Paris Motor Show is the latest major international motor show to be cancelled as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

The organisers of the Paris Motor Show, which was due to take place from 1-11 October, have announced that it will not be held "in its current format". It is the latest of the major automotive events, such as the Geneva and Detroit motorshows, and the Goodwood Festival of Speed, to be cancelled, or postponed in the latter's case.

Although the coronavirus infection is expected to have died down by October, it has been decided the motor show will not take place because of the economic shock to the automotive industry that the pandemic has caused.

The future of the show was already in doubt two years ago, when many major manufacturers decided not to attend. The Paris Motor Show is normally held every two years, alternating with the Frankfurt motor show, which itself has been cancelled for 2021 and replaced with an event in Berlin.

For 2020, the Paris Motorshow was meant to use a slightly different format, with smaller mobility-themed events to be held around Paris, outside the main Porte de Versailles exhibition hall.

These smaller events, under the umbrella name of Movin'On and Smart City are still scheduled to take place.

In a statement, the organisers said: "We are thoroughly examining all alternative solutions with our main partners. The deep reinvention of the event that we had already initiated, particularly with the Festival dimension around sustainable mobility as well as an important BtoB section, could offer this opportunity.

"Nothing will ever be the same, but from this crisis we must learn to become agile, creative and more innovative than ever."
