Euro NCAP updates process and protocols for crash tests

Date: 20 May 2020   |   Author: Illya Verpraet

Euro NCAP, the European organisation that oversees European vehicle crash and safety tests and assigns them a star rating, is updating its protocols.

The first change is to the barrier for frontal crash test. The barrier itself will now move and Euro NCAP will now assess not only how the test car protects its occupants, but also how the test car may contribute to injuries to the occupants of the vehicle it crashes into. Crash test dummies will be changed to a more advanced type.

The side impact test will become tougher as well and Euro NCAP will now also assess how occupants are affected by an impact on the other side of the vehicle. For example, when there is an impact on the driver's side, the driver might be thrown against the passenger, causing injuries. Measures such as a centre airbag would help mitigate this kind of problem.

The agency will also expand its tests for advanced driver assistance technology (ADAS). It will now look at driver monitoring systems, which can detect fatigue and distraction, and it will toughen its tests form automatic emergency braking.

Finally, it will focus more on post-crash safety, looking at whether rescue information is accurate and easily available, ease of extrication, the function of electric door handles, and whether advanced eCall functions are present.
