BMW iX unveiled as new flagship electric SUV

Date: 12 November 2020   |   Author: Sean Keywood

BMW has revealed the iX, a new model it says will lead the way for a new generation of electric cars.

An SUV, it has two electric motors providing a maximum output of more than 500hp, while also being capable of more than 300 miles of range of the WLTP cycle according to provisional figures.

DC fast charging capability of up to 200kW means that the battery should be chargeable from 10-80% in less than 40 minutes.

BMW says the iX's length and width is similar to its existing X5 SUV, while the roofline is close to the X6 SUV-coupe.

Exterior design features include a prominent vertical grille, incorporating camera technology and sensors, while the five-seater cabin is said to offer a high level of spaciousness thanks to the advantages of EV packaging, with no transmission tunnel necessary.

A high level of onboard computing power allows the car to process 20 times the data volume of previous models, which BMW says provides the platform for significant progress in the areas of automated driving and digital services.

The iX is due to come to market at the end of 2021. Specs and prices are yet to be announced.
