5G parking project wins funding

Date: 25 September 2020   |   Author: Sean Keywood

A project to develop a predictive parking system, that uses 5G technology to reduce the amount of time drivers spend looking for parking spaces, has won funding.

Predikt, by AppyWay and Getmapping, is one of seven projects selected to receive a share of £2.4 million from West Midlands 5G Limited - a programme set up by the West Midlands Combined Authority and the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.

Predikt is aiming to give drivers access to highly accurate predictive availability of parking spaces, via 5G kerbside imaging, making their journeys quicker and reducing the amount of time vehicles spend on the road.

Each project to receive funding will be trialled and tested in the West Midlands.

AppyWay chief commercial officer Rob Stait said: "We are thrilled to have been selected as one of the winning projects in this exciting initiative and are looking forward to making a positive impact on people's lives with our predictive parking technology.

"This project builds on previous successful collaborations we have had with Transport for West Midlands and WM5G who are together driving the Midlands forward as a leading UK hub of 5G and transport innovation."
