Mercedes-Benz has confirmed specs and prices for the new version of its S-Class luxury saloon, which is available to order now.

Three engines are available - a 286hp diesel, which emits 173g/km of CO2, and has combined fuel economy of 40.4-42.8mpg with a short-wheelbase model, or 39.2-39.8mpg with a long wheelbase; a 330hp diesel, available with long-wheelbase only, which emits 192g/km of CO2 and achieves 37.7-38.7mpg; and a 435hp petrol mild hybrid, for which the figures are 184g/km of CO2, 32.8-34.9mpg with a short wheelbase, and 31.7-32.5mpg with a long wheelbase.

Nine-speed automatic transmission is standard throughout the range, and the two most powerful engines are available with four-wheel drive.

On-board technology with the new S-Class includes the latest-generation MBUX infotainment system, with a 12.8in central touchscreen, a 12.3in digital driver display, and an MBUX tablet which can also be used outside of the vehicle, plus the 'Hey Mercedes' voice assistant.

Updated driver assistance systems include active distance assist now responding to stationary road users to prevent collisions at up to 80mph (previously 37mph), traffic sign assist now warning or inadvertently running a stop sign or red light, active lane keeping assist now using steering rather than braking intervention, and active evasive steering assist responding to cyclists and ends of traffic jams as well as pedestrians.

The new S-Class range starts with the AMG Line equipment grade - available with short wheelbase only - with standard equipment including 19in alloy wheels, keyless go, front and rear heated seats, front memory seats, wireless charging, multibeam intelligent lights and a reversing camera.

AMG Line Premium spec - available with short or long wheelbase - adds equipment including 20in alloys, a Burmester 3D surround sound system with sound personalisation, a panoramic sliding sunroof, a 3D version of the driver display, a remote parking package including a 360-degree camera, and active ambient lighting, while long wheelbase cars also get electric rear seats with memory, upgraded headrests and climatised rear outer seats.

AMG Line Premium Plus spec - long-wheelbase only - adds equipment including an augmented reality head-up display, digital light with ultra-range high beam, 21in alloys, an Energising Comfort Package, Air Balance, a heated front centre armrest, heated front and rear door armrests, a heated steering wheel and windscreen, and climatised front seats.

A range-topping Executive line can also be added to either Premium or Premium Plus long-wheelbase models, and includes an MBUX rear tablet with 7in touchscreen, electric rear sun blinds, double sun visors, a chauffeur package with a foldable and removable front passenger seat head rest, a front passenger seat adjustable from the rear, and an electrically extendable footrest on the back of the front passenger seat.

Prices for the new S-Class start at £78,705 for a standard wheelbase 286hp diesel AMG Line model. Prices for the 330hp diesel start at £94,135, and the petrol mild hybrid starts at £89,105.

The first UK vehicles are due to arrive in late 2020.
