BVRLA reports new car fleet CO2 milestone amid business contract hire decline

Date: 15 April 2021   |   Author: Sean Keywood

New cars registered by BVRLA members had average CO2 emission figures of less than 100g/km in the fourth quarter of last year, the rental and leasing organisation has said.

Its latest Quarterly Leasing Survey shows that 98g/km was the average figure among members' new car purchases, compared with a 114.2g/km average for all UK new car registrations.

When limited to new business contract hire registrations, the BVRLA figure was even more impressive, at just 80g/km.

In addition, 5% of BVRLA members' cars are now pure EVs, while a further 15% are hybrids, with these fuel types having accounted for 16% and 26% of Q4 registrations respectively.

However, the BVRLA also reported that the size of its members' overall car fleet fell by 5.3% year-on-year, which was largely driven by a 9.3% fall in business contract hire. The organisation cited the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic for the overall drop.

BVRLA chief executive Gerry Keaney said: "The vehicle leasing sector remains at the forefront of road transport decarbonisation and members continue to innovate to provide more individuals and businesses with access to affordable low- and zero-emission vehicles.

"The sector's green credentials will make leasing an attractive option for those living or working in towns and cities looking to introduce clean air zones during 2021 and beyond."
