Widespread fleet electrification possible, Vimcar finds

Date: 08 December 2021   |   Author: Sean Keywood

Up to 90% of fleet vehicles in the UK and Europe could be replaced by EVs, according to a mileage study by fleet management company Vimcar.

Looking at data from over 67,000 fleet vehicles, the company found that 90% of vehicles that drove more than 186 miles in a day - just below the average range of EVs - did so on less than 10% of all working days, while 78% of vehicles that drove more than 124 miles in a day did so on less than 10% of all working days.

Only 12% of vehicles did more than 124 miles on all working days.

Vimcar says this is important as a previous study found 87% of fleet managers thought a vehicle's range was the most important factor when considering whether or not to electrify.

Vimcar UK country manager Sami Eric said: "With the recent discussions held at COP26, there is no hiding the fact that we all need to be doing more to reduce our carbon footprint.

"One of the biggest changes businesses can make is the switch from petrol or diesel vehicles, to electric or hybrid.

"Unfortunately, there is often negativity associated with electric vehicle usage, and the efficiency they have for longer journeys. However, this data proves these fears wrong and that, in fact, the majority of businesses could make the switch and continue to use their fleets in the same way as they are now."
