Unprecedented summer used car market could be on the cards, Glass's reports

Date: 25 June 2021   |   Author: Sean Keywood

The UK used car market could see a stronger summer than ever before over the next few months, according to automotive data firm Glass's.

The market has performed strongly since dealerships reopened in April, although Glass's said the rate of increase in sales and values on the retail market had slowed slightly during May.

As for the auction market, it saw increases in sales volume and values, the latter particularly in the ex-fleet and late and low categories.

Glass's reports that early indications for June are of an even stronger used car auction market, and according to its forecast editor Robert Redman, the question now is how long this trend will be sustained.

He said: "Typically, we would expect a slowing as we passed from July into August, with summer holidays taking the focus away from the purchase of used cars, but 2021 is not going to be a typical year.

"Foreign holidays are going to be substantially down this year, so could we see this level of demand continue all the way into September?

"That level of sustained activity would be unprecedented, but if the last 15 months or so has taught us anything, it is that almost anything could happen."
