New AFRs include petrol and diesel rate rises

Date: 01 March 2021   |   Author: Sean Keywood

New advisory fuel rates (AFRs) have been published by HMRC, including some rises for both petrol and diesel cars.

Compared with the previous rates, those for petrol cars with engines measuring between 1,401cc and 2,000cc, and measuring over 2,000cc, have both seen a one pence per mile increase, to 12ppm and 18ppm respectively.

As for diesel cars, those with engines measuring less than 1,600cc and between 1,601cc and 2,000cc have also both seen a 1ppm rise, to 9ppm and 11ppm respectively.

All other rates are unchanged, including those for LPG cars, while the advisory electricity rate for fully electric cars remains at 4ppm.

Hybrid cars are treated as either petrol or diesel cars for AFR purposes.

The new rates take effect from 1 March, but the previous rates can still be used for up to one month from that date.

The new rates are as follows:

Diesel:

1,600cc or less: 9ppm

1,601cc to 2,000cc: 11ppm

Over 2,000cc: 12ppm

Petrol:

1,400cc or less: 10ppm

1,401cc to 2,000cc: 12ppm

Over 2,000cc: 18ppm

LPG:

1,400cc or less: 7ppm

1,401cc to 2,000cc: 8ppm

Over 2,000cc: 12ppm
