Volvo to go all-electric by 2030, with new EVs only sold online

Volvo says its entire car range will be electric-only by 2030, with newly-introduced EVs only being offered for sale online.

The company says its plan will see cars with internal combustion engines, including hybrids, being phased out by that date.

It says it expects that legislation, and also a rapid expansion and improvement of charging infrastructure, will accelerate public acceptance of EVs.

Volvo launched its first full EV, the XC40 Recharge, last year, and plans to roll out several more in the coming years.

It is aiming for 50% of its sales to be accounted for by full EVs by 2025, with the rest hybrids.

Chief executive Hakan Samuelsson said: "To remain successful, we need profitable growth. So instead of investing in a shrinking business, we choose to invest in the future - electric and online.

"We are fully focused on becoming a leader in the fast-growing premium electric segment."

Chief technology officer Henrik Green said: "There is no long-term future for cars with an internal combustion engine. We are firmly committed to becoming an electric-only car maker and the transition should happen by 2030.

"It will allow us to meet the expectations of our customers and be a part of the solution when it comes to fighting climate change."

Alongside its electrification drive, Volvo says it is heavily investing in its online sales channels, through which its new range of EVs will be offered exclusively, with Care by Volvo - initially launched as a car subscription service - expanding into a broader offering.

Although sales will move online-only, Volvo claims its dealer network will "remain a crucial part of the customer experience", covering functions such as preparing, delivering and servicing cars.

It also claims online sales will feature "transparent and set pricing models", removing the need for haggling.

Volvo head of global commercial operations Lex Kerssemakers said: "The future of Volvo Cars is defined by three pillars: electric, online and growth.

"We want to offer our customers peace of mind and a care-free way of having a Volvo, by taking away complexity while getting and driving the car. Simplification and convenience are key to everything we do."
