UK used car market saw major decline in Q2, SMMT reports

Date: 10 August 2022   |   Author: Sean Keywood

UK used car transactions were down by 18.8% year-on-year during the second quarter of 2022, according to newly-published figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

The Q2 fall contributed to a first half-year decline of 8.3% year-on-year, and of 12.8% compared with pre-Covid 2019.

However, the SMMT pointed out that the Q2 fall was partly due to Q2 2021 data being artificially inflated by the ending of Covid lockdown measures, with Q2 this year representing a decline of only 13.5% compared with the same period in 2019.

The SMMT attributed the decline to the knock-on effect of semiconductor shortages currently hitting new car sales.

The SMMT did point out that used EV sales were up by 57.1% during Q2 - although this still accounted for just 1% of the overall market. Plug-in hybrids were up by 1%, for 0.9% of the market, and conventional hybrids were down by 4% for a 2.4% market share.

SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes said: "It was inevitable that the squeeze on new car supply would filter through to the used market. Despite this, Britain's used car buyers clearly have a growing appetite for the latest low and zero emission cars, and we need a thriving new car market to feed it.

"The next Prime Minister must create the conditions to drive consumer confidence, especially in EVs, and the fleet renewal necessary to meet our decarbonisation goals."
