Fleets expect increasing pressure on decarbonisation, research finds

Date: 01 November 2022   |   Author: Sean Keywood

More than two-thirds of fleets expect the pressure on them to decarbonise to increase over time, according to research by Shell and Deloitte.

The finding that 68% of fleets expect increasing pressure is from a new report entitled 'Navigating Fleet Decarbonisation: A guide to driving a successful transition'.

Among the other findings from the report, for which 150 fleet executives and experts from 12 markets around the globe were surveyed, are that 85% of fleet owners see decarbonisation as one of their top three priorities, while 75% have already implemented at least one solution to reduce emissions.

However, 46% said operating restrictions were a major barrier to implementation, with one survey respondent saying they had to pause their transition for six months due to organisational challenges.

Among the report's recommendations are that fleet owners should develop a holistic implementation roadmap, and complete what it refers to as 'no-regret actions', such as installing telematics systems, which can help to reduce emissions even before the adoption of EVs, since while 95% of fleets see EV adoption as the long-term solution, the report says this should not mean other 'quick wins', such as fleet optimisation, are missed.

It says fleets should identify and mitigate potential organisational challenges involved in transition, and that infrastructure requirements should be assessed, while identifying ways to improve the business case for change.

Also, it says fleets should take lessons from others' experience, such as accepting uncertainty, staying flexible, and tracking progress.

In response to the challenges faced by fleets, Shell and Deloitte have created a set of tools and frameworks designed to assist, including an Accelerate to Zero Roadmap, an Organisational Readiness Toolset, and an EV Transition Toolset.

Shell Fleet Solutions and E-Mobility senior vice president Giorgio Delpiano said: "Tackling climate change by driving emissions reduction is an urgent challenge. As a result, today's fleet businesses are facing increasing pressure to decarbonise - from regulators, customers and employees.

"We designed this report with Deloitte to better understand the key barriers our customers are facing, and to provide fleet owners with a set of tools and frameworks that aim to support decision making as they navigate both the challenges and opportunities ahead.

"At Shell Fleet Solutions, we are committed to being a key decarbonisation partner for our customers because, by helping them to achieve sustainable growth, we can help the industry to meet its net-zero ambitions."

Deloitte partner Matthew Guest said: "Although the fleet market is rapidly changing, and the decision-making environment remains complex - the opportunity for all fleets to decarbonise exists today, no matter what stage you are in your journey.

"This is why we partnered with Shell to develop a practical guide of essential tools and frameworks in the Navigating Fleet Decarbonisation report, to function as a foundation - helping fleet owners understand the preliminary steps needed to support the successful delivery of a decarbonisation strategy.

"That is also why we are working to electrify our own vehicle fleet as part of our WorldClimate programme."
