Fleet car mileages down since pandemic, Aston Barclay reports

Date: 07 September 2022   |   Author: Sean Keywood

The average mileage of ex-fleet cars coming up for auction has decreased since the Covid-19 pandemic, according to Aston Barclay.

The remarketing company said with the increase in hybrid working, average mileages had fallen by 21.1%, from 43,000 to 33,900, while the average age of vehicles had remained at 41 months, despite one-third of lease contracts being extended due to new vehicle supply problems.

Meanwhile, prices have increased by 39.6%, from £10,938 in the second quarter of 2020, to £15,278 in Q2 2022.

Other Aston Barclay data showed that ex-rental cars had gone from being around 18 months old with 20,000 miles on the clock, to four years and 62,600 miles, with rental companies also struggling to source new cars.

There have also been dramatic price rises in the late and low sub-24 month and dealer part exchange categories.

Aston Barclay chief revenue officer Mark Hankey said: "The data shows that in a relatively short space of time many of the used car sectors have changed dramatically, particularly at the late and low and budget ends of the market.

"Ex-rental used cars are now competing with ex-fleet cars at auction while the younger part exchanges have also increased closer to pre-pandemic fleet sector prices.

"It's a lot to take in but basically competition has increased in the mid-sector of the used market. All those cars are now chasing the same buyers."
