AER increased as new AFRs published

Date: 25 August 2023   |   Author: Sean Keywood

New Advisory Fuel Rates (AFRs) have been published by HMRC, alongside an increased Advisory Electricity Rate (AER).

The new AER, for electric company car mileage reimbursement, has been set at 10p per mile, up from 9p per mile previously.

The new AFRs include a 1p per mile increase for mid-sized petrol engines, large diesel engines, and large LPG engines, and a 2p per mile increase for large petrol engines.

Hybrids are treated as either petrol or diesel cars for AFR purposes.

The new rates will apply from 1 September, but the old rates can still be used for up to one month from that date.

The new rates per mile are as follows:

Petrol:

1,400cc or less: 13p

1,401cc to 2,000cc: 16p (up by 1p)

Over 2,000cc: 25p (up by 2p)

Diesel:

1,600cc or less: 12p

1,601cc to 2,000cc: 14p

Over 2,000cc: 19p (up by 1p)

LPG:

1,400cc or less: 10p

1,401cc to 2,000cc: 12p

Over 2,000cc: 19p (up by 1p)
