Hatchbacks replace SUVs as fastest-selling used vehicles, AA Cars reports

Date: 03 January 2023   |   Author: Sean Keywood

Hatchbacks were the fastest-selling used cars in 2022, according to data from AA Cars.

The used car website said hatchbacks took most spots on its top ten fastest-selling list from last year, reversing a trend from 2021, when eight of the top ten were SUVs.

The BMW 116i was the fastest-selling car in 2022, while the Ford Fiesta was the overall most searched-for vehicle.

AA Cars said the increased interest in smaller vehicles came off the back of rising living costs and fuel prices.

AA Cars director Mark Oakley said: "The sharply rising cost of living and fuel is inevitably influencing people's purchasing decisions. Hatchbacks and city cars tend to be cheaper to buy than SUVs, while their smaller size and lower weight mean they can also offer better fuel economy - which makes them particularly attractive in the current market.

"As a result, this year's ranking of the top 10 fastest selling used cars is almost entirely dominated by smaller and more economical models, in stark contrast to 2021's SUV-heavy list.

"Throughout the year, we've seen a steady stream of cost-conscious buyers drawn to the greater choice, and reduced risk of depreciation, that second-hand cars offer when compared to brand new models."

The rest of AA Cars' top ten fastest-selling used cars consisted of the Peugeot 108, Kia Ceed, Hyundai i20, Vauxhall Astra, Citroen C1, Skoda Fabia, Hyundai i30, BMW 118i, and Vauxhall Insignia.

The rest of the overall most searched-for vehicles list consisted of the Ford Focus, Volkswagen Polo, Volkswagen Golf, Nissan Qashqai, Vauxhall Corsa, Fiat 500, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Ford Kuga, and Toyota Yaris.
