Peugeot reveals new EV plans

Date: 26 January 2023   |   Author: Sean Keywood

Peugeot has announced plans to launch five new EVs in the next two years as part of its new electrification strategy, branded as the Peugeot E-Lion Project.

The new EVs will include the E-308, in both hatchback and SW estate forms (pictured), as well as the E-408, E-3008, and E-5008.

The E-308 and E-308 SW will feature a new, 156hp electric motor, and have a range of more than 248 miles on the official WLTP cycle.

As for the E-3008, to be revealed in the second half of this year, this will be the first car based on parent company Stellantis's new STLA-Medium platform, and will have a range of up to 434 miles, with three electric powertrains available, including one with a dual-motor arrangement.

The larger E-5008 will subsequently follow on the same platform.

In addition to the pure EVs, Peugeot will also be rolling out 48V mild hybrid powertrains this year with its 208, 2008, 308, 3008, 408, and 5008 models. These will feature 100hp or 136hp petrol engines, with a six-speed dual clutch gearbox incorporating a 28hp electric motor.

Peugeot says the system will deliver increased low-end torque and a 15% reduction in fuel consumption compared with a conventional petrol engine, and that it will allow more than 50% zero-emission driving in urban areas.

The E-Lion Project also includes other elements of sustainability. For example, it features ways of handling the expected increased lifespan of an EV of 20-25 years, compared with 15 years for a current ICE vehicle. This includes the ability to refurbish and recycle key parts, including using recycled parts, and to refresh key 'wear-and-tear' parts of the car, such as upholstery and trim, whenever it changes hands, with regular over-the-air software updates also included.

Peugeot design director Matthias Hossann said: "Imagine no more second-hand cars. Instead, a fresh and personalised car you can update or upgrade anytime, depending on your needs. An always up-to-date product that keeps its value throughout its lifetime."

Also part of the E-Lion Project is a focus on saving weight, through initiatives such as thinner seats and air-quilted fabrics; saving waste, such as through moulded fabrics; saving resources, such as through raw material finishes, and removing alloy and chrome elements; and saving energy, via electric efficiency.

Peugeot product director Jerome Micheron said: "These developments herald a new era that is more respectful of our environment and allows us to offer our customers unique innovations."

Peugeot says the E-Lion Project feeds in to its targeting of carbon net zero status by 2038.

CEO Linda Jackson said: "The E -Lion Project will define Peugeot's strategy as an EV brand and ensure we stay connected to the pulse of society to deliver mobility that lives up to our brand values.

"Carbon net zero is not three words: it's a mindset, an approach, one that we all need to embrace as organisations and as individuals.

"Equally the E-Lion Project is not a strategy and a ppt deck. This is a project that we are committed to delivering on because it is critically important for us and future generations."
