Volvo and Polestar cars to get new HD Google mapping

Date: 06 January 2023   |   Author: Sean Keywood

Volvo and Polestar have announced the introduction of a new HD map from Google to their vehicles.

The brands, both owned by Geely, will first introduce the technology with the upcoming Volvo EX90 (pictured) and Polestar 3 models.

According to the manufacturers, combining data from the car's exterior sensors with the new map data will facilitate assisted driving features, as well as future autonomous driving functionality.

Volvo Cars COO and deputy CEO Javier Varela said: "The addition of Google HD Maps in our future car line-up marks an expansion of our strategic collaboration with Google, reflecting our commitment to work with technology leaders.

"Implementing Google HD Maps in our upcoming cars will help us offer our drivers a more enjoyable driving experience and in future contribute to the introduction of safe autonomous driving."

Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath, also referencing the roll-out of remote actions to the Polestar 2, said: "These developments are the direct result of our strong relationship with Google and show the advantages of integrating the innovative Android Automotive OS in our cars."

Google VP and general manager of Geo Automotive Jorgen Behrens said: "Building on our long history of mapping the world, Google's new HD map is designed specifically for automakers and provides comprehensive lane-level and localisation data that is crucial to powering the next generation of assisted and autonomous driving systems.

"We're excited to continue partnering with leading automakers such as Volvo Cars to improve the safety and comfort of drivers everywhere."
