Technical details of Kia EV9 announced

Date: 29 March 2023   |   Author: Sean Keywood

Kia has revealed further details of its new EV9 electric SUV, including powertrain specifications.

The new announcement follows on from the unveiling of the model's design earlier this month.

The EV9 will be available with a choice of two single-motor, rear-wheel drive powertrains - the Long Range, with 204hp, and the Standard, with 218hp - and the twin-motor, AWD powertrain, with a total of 385hp. The Standard - which will only be offered in selected markets with UK availability to be confirmed - will come with a 76.1kWh battery, and the Long Range and AWD with a 99.8kWh battery.

Kia is targeting a range of over 336 miles for the Long Range model on the official WLTP cycle, and says 800V charging capability will allow enough electricity for 148 miles of driving to be added in around 15 minutes.

The AWD powertrain will be capable of later upgrades via the Kia Connect Store, with a Boost feature adding extra torque and improving acceleration - the store will have various features available via over-the-air updates.

Vehicle-to-load functionality will allow up to 3.68kW of power to be supplied from the EV9 to power things such as laptops or camping equipment.

A future feature of the EV9 - where permitted - will be Level 3 automated driving via the Highway Driving Pilot system, which Kia says will allow drivers to take temporary breaks from controlling the vehicle, thanks to the provision of 15 sensors, including two lidars, enabling the system to scan for and detect objects in a full 360-degree field of view.

A large SUV, the EV9 measures just over five metres in length, and is nearly two metres wide. It will be available as either a six-seater or seven-seater.

Kia says the EV9 will go on sale in selected global markets from the second half of this year. UK specs and prices are yet to be announced.
