ACFO has criticised the delayed introduction of a scheme that would allow fleet managers to check driving licences directly with the DVLA.
A pilot for the service was planned for early 2007, but it was delayed and has still not been started.
“We are extremely disappointed that this excellent scheme has been delayed so much,” said ACFO director Stewart Whyte.
The proposed ‘Driver Licence Check’ service would allow commercial clients to view information from a driver’s record online.
Whyte added: “From an occupational road risk management perspective this is essential if fleets are to comply with best practice advice and be able to provide a comprehensive audit of drivers, vehicles and journeys in the event of an employee being involved in a serious crash.”
“We recognise the importance of providing timely information and have worked with industry representatives to introduce opportunities to complete secure electronic checking services,” said a spokesman for the DVLA in response.
“We will shortly be carrying out a pilot that will include seven organisations, three of which represent the fleet and freight industry.”
