Electric vehicle infrastructure company Chargepoint Services – operator of the GeniePoint network of chargers – has announced it is to upgrade infrastructure in Coventry.
As part of the scheme, seven Chargemaster units will be replaced by new twin socket units hooked up to the GeniePoint network.
The Chargemaster technology is left over from the government-funded Plugged in Places scheme started in 2009, with today’s units being a lot more reliable.
According to Chargepoint Services, the uptake of EVs is increasing steadily; in order to support this growth, new units with upgraded technology will be taking their place.
Motorists will be able to access the new chargers 24 hours a day via a membership card or through their smartphone.
Depending on the type of charger used, motorists in Coventry will pay either 50p or £1 to connect to the unit, with energy used to recharge the vehicle capped at 30p per kW.
“The city of Coventry is geographically situated at the global centre of cutting-edge, automotive engineering technology,” said Alex Bamberg, managing director of Chargepoint Services. “Coventry City Council is majorly supportive of clean vehicle technology and we are very pleased to be supporting their efforts to provide outstanding recharging facilities to drivers visiting the city centre. We look forward to the next phase of the project, which will be to provide rapid charging facilities, enabling even faster charging for drivers around Coventry.”
