The average cost of using a slow public EV charger in the UK fell in July, according to new data from the AA.

The motoring organisation said the average peak rate cost of using a charger with speeds of less than 8kW fell by 2p per kWh, while the average cost of using such a charger with a flat rate applied fell by 1p, as did the average domestic charging rate, in line with the Ofgem domestic energy price cap.

In contrast, the average peak rate for an 8-49kW charger rose by 2p per kWh.

AA head of roads policy Jack Cousens said: “The reduction in slow charging costs meant EV drivers without a driveway were able to experience some of the benefit of cheaper charging outside their front door.

“However, more must be done to bring public charging costs down further, so more drivers able to make the switch to EVs can be convinced of the benefits.

“Removing VAT from public charging remains a simple and popular solution, but tackling the wider issue of high UK electricity prices would also drive prices down.”
