A DfT document assessing the Road Safety Act 2006 has revealed Government plans to scrap both the old-style paper-only driving licences in favour of the newer card system and the paper counterpart to the newer card system.
The move, which is not expected before 2014 at the earliest, will only be possible after a consultation and if the correct online systems are in place, according to the DVLA. The plan is part of a DVLA efficiency drive but will force fleets to move to online licence checking.
