The Department for Transport has announced that 28 councils in England will receive a share of a £275 million pot for major local road maintenance.
Known as the Challenge Fund, the money will be used for one-off major infrastructure schemes by local authorities. The money is part of a £6 billion funding package for local road maintenance that was announced in December 2014.
The funding was awarded following a bidding process from local councils.
Blackpool Borough Council will spend £5.6m to repair and reconstruct 10 of the city’s bridges, while Devon County Council was awarded £10.2m to provide replacement street lighting on all main roads throughout the county and Norfolk County Council was awarded £9.1m to upgrade drainage in the region.
“Good quality local roads are essential for people to get on with their daily business and today’s announcement will provide extra capacity where it is needed most,” said Transport Secretary, Patrick McLoughlin.
“This government has put record funding in place for local roads as part of our long-term economic plan to improve journeys, create jobs and drive economic growth.”
