RED Driving school is asking the Government and DVSA to provide clarity on how driving instructors might safely resume work.
As the Government gradually relaxes the lockdown, driving schools, who have many self-employed driving instructors on the books, start thinking about how they might resume operations.
RED is asking the government and regulatory bodies to provide guidance on how this can be done safely.
A survey from accountancy service FBTC found that over half of the UK’s driving instructors are looking to the DVSA and the Government for guidance on this, with 51% citing such guidance as a condition for restarting in-car teaching, which necessarily involves close proximity.
Although the issue is most critical for the large numbers of young people who want to pass their driving test, it means that fleet driver training can’t go ahead either.
Ian McIntosh, CEO at RED Driving School, said: “We understand that it’s impossible to socially distance inside a car, but the lack of solutions offered to this problem by regulatory bodies is frustrating. With other businesses preparing to go back to work, the driving instructor industry feels like the forgotten sector.”
