The Government is spending £1bn over the next five years replacing its fleet with a generation of cleaner cars, according to a report in The Times.
There are about 78,000 vehicles operated by ministers and civic servants (including 48,000 cars and vans run by the NHS). The green spend figure follows the setting of a 15% cut in carbon emissions by 2011 imposed by the Government earlier this year. The cars come from 38 departments, which will split the costs between them.
The Times reports 15 car makers have been selected to provide this greener fleet including Ford, Vauxhall, Nissan, Volkswagen, Toyota, Honda, BMW and Chevrolet.
The fleet deal has been orchestrated by the Office of Governmental Commerce and is expected to save taxpayers £100m.
The paper also reports John Prescott will not have to give up his two Jags as the famous British brand is also on the list.
