Highways England has confirmed all of the old payment booths and plazas have been removed from the Dartford Crossing.

The 27 lanes of payment barriers were removed in conjunction with the change to the DartCharge payment system.

The final northbound road layout on the approach to the Dartford tunnels (A282 northbound) is now in operation.

The lanes divide at junction 1a. Vehicles in lanes 1 and 2 (left hand lanes) use the west tunnel while vehicles in lanes 3 and 4 (right hand lanes) can use the east tunnel.

Vehicles joining at junction 1a can only access lanes 1 and 2 and use the west tunnel, which has a height restriction of 4.8m.

A new traffic safety system is in operation, which allows the Government-owned body to identify vehicles that may pose a safety risk, escort vehicles through the tunnels and stop vehicles from entering the tunnels in the event of an incident.

These tasks were previously performed when vehicles were stationary at the barriers.

HE is now working to introduce a new southbound road layout, for traffic coming off the QEII Bridge. This includes the construction of a new retaining wall to support the new road alignment, ground strengthening and carriageway resurfacing. The work is expected to be completed by the end of the month.
