London mayor Boris Johnson’s plan to encourage more electric cars on to the capital’s roads under a blanket sub-75g/km congestion charge level could result in fleets balancing costs with cheaper, less green vehicles, according to Marshall Leasing.

Sales and marketing director Jonathan Ross claimed that soundings among London-based clients showed their scepticism about the Ultra Low Emission Discount encouraging them to run electric cars in London.

Ross said: “Far from encouraging businesses to go electric, our feedback suggests they could instead be forced to find other ways to compensate for the Green Vehicle Discount’s abolition.

“Some of this could represent a move away from low-emission vehicles.”

The current sub-100g/km threshold is to be scrapped and only vehicles generating below 75g/km will avoid the £10 daily levy.
