Nissan has pulled the virtual covers off the Ariya, its new electric SUV.

Described by the firm as a ‘coupe-crossover’, it is built on a new EV platform developed by the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance.

The Ariya will be available with either two-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, and with two different battery capacities – 63kWh or 87kWh.

Five different powertrain options will be available – two-wheel drive cars with 217hp or 242hp, and all-wheel drive cars with 278hp, 306hp and 394hp.

Estimated driving ranges on the WLTP test cycle go from a low point of up to 211 miles for the 278hp model, to a high of 310 miles for the 242hp model.

Versions with the 63kWh battery feature a 7.4kW charger for domestic use, while those with the 87kWh battery get a 22kW three-phase charger.

The Ariya can also support public rapid charging at up to 130kW.

All-wheel drive Ariyas will feature rear-motor regenerative braking, alongside the front motor system common to existing EVs.

On-board technology includes a voice recognition system with what Nissan calls ‘advanced natural language understanding technology’, and there’s also a pair of 12.3in screens and a full colour head-up display.

The Ariya also gets an enhanced version of Nissan’s ProPilot driver assistance system, integrating sat-nav and sensor data to help the system choose the appropriate speed for the conditions, such as slowing the car before a sharp corner.

The Ariya is also set to be the first Nissan to benefit from firmware over-the-air updates.

Details of pricing and an on-sale date are yet to be announced.
