Cars with petrol engines are more than twice as likely to fail the MoT emissions test than a diesel equivalent, according to figures released by fuel additive firm Redex.
Of tests conducted in 2010 and the first nine months of 2011 (the most recent VOSA data), 3.9% of diesel cars tested failed the MoT on emissions grounds, while 9.7% of petrol cars failed for the same reason.
The firm put the trend down to the nature of the MoT?test itself. Bruce Ellis, R&D manager at Redex, said:?”Petrol cars are assessed for a high number of gases and hydrocarbons in the exhaust emissions, while diesels are tested only for smoke levels.”
