Seat has pulled the wraps off its first petrol electric hybrid concept in Barcelona.

The Twin Drive Ecomotive prototype is based on the lower medium Leon hatchback, and would run on electricity in town and petrol elsewhere.

Seat is also developing plug-in propulsion and hopes to introduce diesel hybrids as well as a petrol version. But the brand also plans to eventually phase out the conventional petrol and diesel powered engines in its Ecomotive range.

The first cars under the Twin Drive label could be on the road in five years’ time, at the end of Seat’s development of the technology in 2014.
