Car hire company Enterprise Rent-A-Car has launched a trial car-sharing programme. WeCar, based in Woking, is in partnership with Woking Borough Council to support its green initiatives.
Employees can book one of two sub-120g/km vehicles based at the council’s car park for up to four hours at a time.
Bookings can be made through a website while in-car telematics allow staff to unlock the vehicle with a WeCar membership card when their allocated time arrives.
As the programme grows, the technology will be able to advise users of their nearest available vehicle, said Enterprise Rent-A-Car.
If the two-month trial is a success, based on employee feedback and sufficient demand, the cars are expected to be available to local businesses and residents outside the council’s working hours.
There will also be a larger number of cars on offer.
Senior policy officer for climate change Lara Curran said the programme gives the council “the opportunity to address the grey fleet risks and costs, allowing us to provide a viable alternative to mileage reimbursement”.
She added: “It provides a great addition to our travel options, which will continue to include rental, leasing and public transport. More importantly. It provides the opportunity to tackle some of our higher risk, higher polluting business trips.”
