The Alfa Romeo Mito has been somewhat off limits to the fleet sector because of its three-door-only body style and a range dominated by potent 1.4-litre petrol engines, but the introduction of a clean 1.3-litre JTDm diesel version has changed that for fleets that don’t automatically rule out three-door models.
Emissions of 95g/km and a claimed average of 78.5mpg are a big draw, as is the Mito’s handsome styling and an interior that’s equally easy on the eye. The new engine’s trump card is its figures rather than refinement, but it performs well at low speed in particular and, though not quite as strong on major roads, it cruises comfortably enough.
Fit and finish inside has improved over previous Alfa Romeos, but the Mito still doesn’t feel as well put together as solid rivals such as the Mini or the Audi A1. Plastics on the centre console around the handbrake are a particular sore point. But the new 85hp engine gives the Mito a fresh business car attraction that will appeal to some that want style but don’t need space.
