BMW has introduced all-wheel drive to its 3-series saloon range, initially with the 320i petrol model.
The all-wheel drive Xdrive 320i costs £1500 more than a standard rear-wheel drive 320i, and adds 12g/km in CO2, bumping it up two BIK bands. Consequently, higher-rate tax payers will pay £29 per month more, while economy of 41.5mpg is 3.3mpg worse than the standard saloon. That said, BMW claims the diesel Xdrive versions coming soon will be significantly closer to the efficiency of their regular counterparts.
But it’s the costings that do the biggest harm to the Xdrive 3-series. Unless you regularly need all-wheel drive traction, the extra up-front and what is lost in efficiency mean it’s not worth the increase in outlay. It may have been appealing to have four-wheel traction with the recent snow, but a set of winter tyres or just accepting that there are times where you can’t go out on the roads would both be cheaper and more logical solutions.
