BMW‘s new 7-series doesn’t go on sale until November and isn’t available to drive until September. So when BMW offered us a drive in a pre-production version of its new flagship saloon we jumped at the chance.
Rather than the extreme design change witnessed with the current 7-series, the exterior has this time been tweaked rather than overhauled. The big changes, however, come under the bonnet and in the form of new technology.
The 407PS 4.4-litre V8, the only version available at the exclusive preview event, is new to the 7-series, having made its debut on the recently launched X6. It is a powerful and responsive unit limited to 155mph and takes just 5.2secs to reach 62mph.
Despite this brute force, it is manageable at low speeds, while a highly competent six-speed auto means the power arrives in an instant when requested. The eight cylinders mean it sounds great in the process too.
