Mazda has introduced its first stop-start system, fitting it to the 2.0-litre petrol version of its lower medium 3 model.
It’s a significant move, because it takes the hatchback below 161g/km, which has capital allowance significance for both fleets buying outright or to the lease rate if that’s the route of choice.
The stop-start system cuts the 3’s emissions by 19% to 159g/km, putting it in the 19% benefit-in-kind tax band, and economy improves by 16% to 41.5mpg.
The 151hp 2.0-litre petrol engine is appealing, and Mazda hopes the emissions reductions will see some fleets turn back to petrol power.
The 3 is good looking, well-built and drives well, and for drivers looking for petrol power, the i-stop system is a welcome addition, especially given the car’s emissions band.
